Fisherman killed in clash with police to prevent Jatka killing

A clash took place between fishermen and a patrol team of the naval police on Monday night at the Mohanpur area of North Matlab on the Meghna River in Chandpur. A fisherman who was shot by a police shotgun died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Tuesday morning.The deceased fisherman was identified as Masud, a resident of the Kalirchar area of ​​Munshiganj district. 

A police team led by Inspector Abul Hossain Sarkar, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Mohanpur Naval Police Outpost, was on patrol at night. At that time, the naval police tried to resist a group of fishermen who were catching Jatka in the river, defying the ban, said SP Md Kamruzzaman of Naval Police Chandpur region. “However, the fishermen attacked the police with logs and bricks. Police fired a shotgun in self-defense.”

“In this, a fisherman named Masud was shot in the left leg. He was first admitted to Matlab Uttar Upazila Health Complex and later to DMCH hospital after his condition deteriorated. He died in the morning while undergoing treatment.”

The SP further said that two fishermen have been arrested in the incident. Besides, 25 kg Jatka, 2,000 meters net and an engine-driven fishing boat were seized.
